Food at mowgli
Mowgli review: The food we ordered

Mowgli is one of the restaurants we have wanted to visit for quite a while. We love Indian flavours and know that British curry houses are not always a true representation of traditional Indian cuisine. The dishes at Mowgli are inspired by traditional Indian street food and home cooking traditions rather than the thick curry sauces you will find at most Indian takeaways in Britain. We are also fans of the restaurant chain’s founder, Nisha Katona, and enjoy watching her on the judging panel of Great British Menu. Following our visit to the chain’s Preston location, here is our Mowgli review.

When Did We Visit?

We visited the Preston location of Mowgli on 04/09/2023 during lunchtime service.

Mowgli Review: What Did We Eat?

To get a rounded view of the food at Mowgli, we ordered a selection of meat, vegetable, and side dishes. Our choices included the following:

  • Monkey Wrap: an open roti with tandoori chicken, pomegranate, spinach, mint, and chutneys. The chicken was well cooked and had a nice char on the outside while remaining moist in the middle. Every mouthful was different due to the variety of chutneys in the wrap.
  • House Lamb Curry: quite a mildly spiced curry, but the slices of ginger on the top gave those who like spicy food (including us) the option to heat up the dish a little. It was a really tasty sauce with chunks of tender lamb that were falling apart.
  • Temple Dahl: A mildly spiced lentil dish flavoured with lemon, cumin, and coriander. The addition of a sliced chilli garnish gave the vegan option the extra heat I prefer but allowed those who prefer mild dishes the option to set the chillies to the side.
  • Basmati Rice: Lightly flavoured with cumin and black cardamom.
  • Mowgli Slaw: Red cabbage and onion in a light yoghurt and mustard seed dressing.

Additional note: We loved the tiffin style of eating.

Mowgli Review: Overall Dining Experience

I always think that the dining experience is about so much more than the food. The dining environment and customer service also play a role. We had two servers, both of whom were friendly and helpful.

The décor at Mowgli is amazing, with lots of twinkly lights. My favourite part of dining at Mowgli was when they asked if we wanted to sit at a regular table or on swings. It was totally unexpected and nothing I have done in any other restaurant. Obviously, we chose to sit on the swings as it is such a fun idea.

Overall, we had a very pleasant dining experience, and we would recommend Mowgli as one of the best Indian restaurants in Preston, Lancashire.
