I like the city’s historic nature and its location close to both the coast and the Lake District. There are plenty of things to do in Lancaster, whether you are a local or just visiting the area.
This city has a fascinating history, and this will become apparent as you explore the area. Lancaster has royal ties that go back to Medieval times and the House of Lancaster. It was once the main city in Lancashire and played an essential role in trade and industry. The city remains under the title of the Duke of Lancaster, and the royal family has larger holdings in the land surrounding Lancaster.

Not only is Williamson Park one of my favourite places to visit in Lancaster, it is probably my favourite place in Lancashire for a day out. It is where I take my children if the weather is nice and I have some time off work, as there are so many things to enjoy at this attraction.
The park covers approximately 54 acres of woodland with pathways for you to explore the park. Walking around, you will also see ponds, bridges, water features, small cliff faces, and various structures and monuments. My children love the freedom of running around the park, climbing up the slopes, and rolling down the hill.
At the highest point in the park sits Ashton Memorial, a historic domed structure that visitors can enter. There is quite a climb to the top, but it is worth the effort for the views. Not only can you see right across the park, but you can also enjoy spectacular views of the City of Lancaster and across Morecombe Bay.
Another of the main features of the park is the Butterfly House. It is a substantial Victorian conservatory home to butterflies, insects, birds, fish, and terrapins. On Leaving the Butterfly House, you can visit the Reptile Room, which leads to a bird garden and then to a small animal area.
There are two playgrounds for children to enjoy, and you can either enjoy a picnic on the lawned areas or visit the attractions café.
Throughout the year, there are outdoor performances held in the park. It is also a popular wedding venue.
Go to the Lancaster Maritime Museum
If you are interested in the history of the local area, then head to Lancaster Maritime Museum. As its name suggests, the focus is on the area’s maritime history, although the museum also covers other aspects of the city’s past.
